My artwork has been focused on engaging my audience and introducing them to my experience as a Colombian-born artist who grew up in Los Angeles. I am interested in the conversation that takes place between art and the audience; therefore, I create art that invites my audience to go beyond the experience of a passive observer and enter into my work. Every piece I create offers the viewer a chance to delve into the meaning and nuances suggested in the work.
Over the last few years, I have had the pleasure of traveling and living in places such as Colombia, Florida, and Central California. My color palette combinations, geometric patterns, and expressionism are derived from my experiences in those places. My art satisfies a deep need I have to express my life through an artistic medium, and painting has given me a chance to do this. My favorite mediums are acrylics -- a very forgiving medium—well-suited to my style and subject matter, and digital. I like to paint on canvas, though I also paint on watercolor paper and on fine art paper for my digital work.
My work has been influenced by the decorative arts, abstract art, and expressionism. My current work aims to stimulate and even overwhelm the eye and the senses with a barrage of geometry, interesting patterns, illustrations, and color. Juxtaposing the figurative central portion of the painting with its fluid lines, darker palettes and expressionistic portrayals of individuals with the decorative, bold-colored geometric borders, a dynamic tension is created that draws the viewer into the world of the figures and delights the eye with inviting color schemes and pleasing shapes of the borders. My goal is to engage the viewer and their senses and tell small stories of my life. It is personal and subjective view that reflects my own experience as a multi-cultural individual and an artist.
