Insook is originally from Seoul in South Korea where she worked as a musician and studied in modern and classical music. For 11 years she played in various bands and worked as a session musician for other artists too. During this time she was also deeply fascinated by art and photography.
In music she took influence from the Beatles’s rock ‘n’ roll, Eric Clapton’s blues, Pink Floyd’s rock, Billie Holiday’s soul and Bach’s harmony, and these influential expressions of artistic emotion, love and angst can still be felt in her visual artwork today.
‘Music is a great way to express emotion but through photography I can visually narrate and document how I see the world on a much more personal level.’
On moving to the U.K. Insook began working as a photographer professionally and set up a business in London doing portrait and wedding photography. Despite being very sought after in this field she felt a hole in heart that wasn’t being satisfied so she started experimenting and focussing on her artwork instead.
‘The work I was doing was not a true reflection of who I was or what I was feeling. I realised that I wanted to express my art freely and without any rules.’
Insook has a unique perception of the world seeing beauty and emotion in the normal and mundane and through her artwork captures the loneliness and isolation of this chaotic modern world.
