Tom Cabrera, New York, NY is a jazz musician and contemporary painter. As a jazz drummer/percussionist he has over forty years experience performing and recording throughout metro New York and other parts of the US. Many of his paintings have been featured on album covers for both Unseen Rain Records and Woodshedd Records which are distributed worldwide. His paintings expose and explore an unseen consciousness beneath the surface of awareness — both his own and that of his audience. While he began painting decades ago, his work has been enhanced immeasurably by the forty plus years spent as a professional jazz musician. It is apparent that brush strokes on canvas are rhythm and in many ways he considers his art to be a process of painting music. Like the best jazz, it’s about improvising within the discipline of a contextual structure. His paintings have been described as dreamlike, expressing a gestalt rather than a traditional understanding of concept. That response is one that he appreciates and embraces.
